Miller is co-founder, Administrative Director, and a therapist for the Christian agency, MASTERPEACE Center for Counseling and Development, in Tecumseh, Michigan. For twenty-two years he has helped people through counseling, writing, public speaking, and his radio talk show.

A Colorful and Interesting Account

Medical memoirs have become a popular genre. Most are quite revealing as to the virtual hell a four to five year resident must experience to become a qualified practitioner. The resident surgeon's experience has to be the most hellish in terms of the amount of hours worked, (100 hour weeks) the pressure brought to bear from the attending staff, sometimes extremely sadistic, abrasive and demeaning, not to mention the continuos mental strain from lack of sleep and the stress on the residents family, some families, unfortunately, disintegrate at some point along the way. Craig Miller's book clearly expresses all these things, however it is the spirit in which he communicates these experiences that makes his memoir worthwhile reading.

A better word would be a colourful account of his experiences as a resident. He not only explains the program in easy to comprehend prose, it is his anecdotes, describing the many characters that make-up this world that is entertaining as well as intriguing. About halfway through the text, I wondered if he had changed the names of the attending staff, nurses, and fellow surgeons that he profiles, because his characterizations are really, for the most part, quite scathing. In some cases the descriptions bordered on the libellous, smelling a legal suit some time in the future. However I'm sure his editors took this into consideration before publication. I certainly hope so.

The most revealing and educational part of the book was Miller's explanation of the standard step-by-step procedure (the Advanced Trauma Life Support protocols) when working in the ER, the initial steps of trauma management. Interestingly it is broken down simply so that the attending staff do not have to "think", but sequentially run through this procedure of "A is for Airway, B is for Breathing, C is for circulation, D is for Disability and E is for exposure." (P. 207) Miller is extremely annoyed how TV dramas as well as `reality' documentaries give the wrong impression to add to the pathos. In fact the ATLS protocols, following the A, B, C, D, E standard procedure avoids the chaos, ensuring the best for the trauma victim. This section of the text was extremely informative.

By the end of Miller's Chief Residency, he had the confidence and the confidence of his teachers to forge on alone, and realized he had truly become a surgeon. Having read the book in an afternoon, his writing was such that I felt his relief and sense of accomplishment by the end of his five-year residency. This has to be one of the most difficult and gruelling training out of all the professions, physically, intellectually and emotionally. In the Epilogue, Miller expresses his ambivalence about the current residency system in terms of its viciousness and amazing effectiveness in producing top-notch surgeons. The system hasn't changed since the 19th century. The process certainly takes its toll but for a price and is the price worth it?

A recommended read for anyone interested in the education of a surgeon.

A natural follow up to Dr. Nolen's book

The world of surgical training has changed tremendously over the past few years. As little as 5 years ago, the rule in surgical residency training was 110-120 hour-work weeks and even some rotations demanded 24 hour in-house coverage for several weeks at a time. This "old school" period is brilliantly narrated by William A. Nolen in "The Making of a Surgeon", but today's reality, significantly different, was captured splendidly by Dr. Miller.

Dr. Miller comes through with what feels like a natural follow-up of Dr. Nolen's work. There are interesting comparisons of several features of our current training as opposed to that of Dr. Nolen's era.

This book was very entertaining, critical and even funny. Suitable for both the non-health system related reader, as well as medical students and residents as a way of comparing our own training. Dr. Miller managed to explain technical terms in a very simple and short fashion that doesn't interrupt his rhythm even for the expert surgical readers.

I highly recommend this book particularly to medical students contemplating a surgical career. If you don't find yourself laughing at Miller's humor, then surgery might not be your most suitable future!

Dynamite and small packages...

Five feet three and three eighths inches. That is the height of the intrepid investigator in this wonderful story. This book was loaned to me by a friend, and I could not put it down. Joshua Bigg is the name of our detective. He is unlicensed, and is employed by a legal firm. With very little experience under his belt, he still manages to make a big splash, while working on what he first believes are two unrelated cases, given him by two senior partners in his firm. In a mild, unassuming way, he not only is able to tie the cases together, but find a couple of murderers, who also bully, blackmail, and beat many of the people in the book. Joshua is able to make many friends, because in his own experience, he has learned that it serves not much purpose to throw his negligible weight around. If you read this story, I can guarantee you will be cheering for his success all the way to the end.

Although this book is set in modern time, it strikes a very familiar, old timey memory with me, and I think about all the nights I spent reading about Archie Goodwin and his adventures. I don't know if Mr. Sanders would receive this remark kindly, but many memories of Archie and Saul were evoked while reading this story. I do not know if he will write, or has written, another book featuring Josh Bigg, but I certainly hope so!

The Tenth Commandment

This is an excellent book about investigation. Joshua Biggs rapidly increases his knowledge and experience on solving several situations. although this main character is only 5'3 and 3/8", he is big among attorney investigators in New York city. This thrilling book is amazing. I really like this book because the author explains certain situations that many of us would recognize in our own private experiences that we for some reason do not really speak much of.

A small parcel

Chief Investigator Joshua Bigg works for a prestigious firm of lawyers in New York, looking into suspicious circumstances around any of their cases. An intelligent, well dressed man of 5'3 3/8" (he insistes on the exact measurements), he is drawn into two cases which the firm is handling, the first being the disappearance of a Yale University professor and the second, the apparent suicide of the husband of a well known socialite. He befriends a police detective and the two of them form an alliance which enables them to dig deeper into the motives of a friend of both families, a clergyman who befriends wealthy widows and lines his pockets with their money. It's an amusing, well written story which exposes the many scams of unscrupulous con men who prey on the lonely and bereaved.

About the Author
Michael Nicholson is one of the world’s most travelled and most decorated television foreign correspondents. He has braved 18 war zones over the past 40 years, picking up a host of awards. Michael is a familiar face in Britain’s homes as a former anchor of ITV’s Evening News and a correspondent for long-running current affairs series Tonight. Welcome to Sarajevo: a masterpice

I find the book not only informative about the history of the balkans, but it also provides a breathtaking account of the hardships vivited upon the Bosnian people cruelity that was visisted upon Bosnia and its children thanks to the ethnic cleasnisng project engineered and conducted by Serb nationalists. Indeed, Mr Nicholson is not only a good story teller, but he is a jouralist whose account of the Bosnian war is filled with depth, compassion and courage. I have read this book over and over again, and it is simply difficult to put down. I recommened it to students of the balkan history and those who want to follow a career in journalism and creative writing. Welcome to sarajevo is a masterpiece!!!

A little book of "sound" advice.

I picked this little ditty up when it was offered as a freebie and I'm glad I did. Although this short isn't really "deep", it is well written and contains good tips to help make your first "open mic" session a success. Short, to-the-point and practical, I give this one a solid 4 stars.

A pivotal year in Australian history

As Professor David Horner writes in an instructive opening chapter, 1942 was a pivotal year in Australian history. The long term effects of the challenges faced at that time changed forever Australia’s character, and how we thought about ourselves in the world arena. Looking back 70 odd years, one sees a vastly different, under developed. sparsely populated country with limited infrastructure. Yet, in those dark days Australia was pivotal to Allied success in the South West Pacific, providing a base from which the Americans could sustain the initial counter offensive against the Japanese. 1942 was not only a contest to preserve the lines of communication between that base and the United States, it ushered in a new era in Australian society.

Covering a wide spectrum in twelve tightly written chapters, Dean and his co-authors trace the political, strategic, and societal impact on Australia, the poor state of our defences, and the desperate, hard fought battles in the horrendous terrain of Papua. Along the way a few well worn myths are disposed of, and Albert Palazzo reminds us of the folly of entrusting a nation’s defence to another country on the other side of the globe, and allowing our own defence capabilities to erode to such a parlous state.

Dealing with the Home Front, Pam Oliver suggests our relationships with the Japanese before the war which were friendlier than post war views would have us believe, Kate Darian-Smith highlights the lasting impact the influx of American servicemen made on society in general, and Ross McMullin provides a hagiological view of the Curtin government that seems short on objective assessment. Several chapters explode the myth of intended Japanese invasion, and in particular Hiroyuki Shindo and Steve Bullard demonstrate that while the Japanese Navy certainly considered it, the Army had no interest and both Services had overreached their capacity to do so. In a similar vein Alan Powell places the air raid on Darwin in perspective, demonstrating that its significance, both as a military operation and within Australian history, is a recent phenomenon generated by successive governments to boost the Northern Territory’s profile.

Ian Pfennigwerth delivers a fine analysis of the RAN’s readiness, capabilities and contribution during 1942, which sadly the RAAF chapter does not, and Karl James brings a balanced view of the Kokoda and Milne Bay campaigns free of nationalistic hyperbole. Perhaps the best analysis is Peter Dean’s assessment of the battles for the beach heads around Buna, Gona and Sanananda, in which he places the pressures on MacArthur and Blamey, together with the relative performance of the AIF, Militia and US Forces, in objective perspective.

Australia 1942 is a welcome addition to the historiography of this momentous year in Australian history. Well written, well researched, objective in its analysis, and instructive in its topics it is a strong antidote to the mythology peddled by the more popular histories.

This outstanding book of readings by twelve distinguished academics concerns efforts to save Australia during its pivotal year, 1942, when it was uncertain whether Japan intended to invade the country. The book includes a foreword by Australia's Ambassador to the United States at the time of publication. Each contributor's chapter ends with a helpful bibliography and suggestions for further reading. The book reminds us how unprepared Australia was in 1941. On November 15, General Sir Thomas Blamey warned Australians they were "gazelles grazing in a dell on the edge of the jungle while the beasts of prey are working up toward you." As soon as the Singapore Strategy failed, though, Prime Minister Curtin was prescient to see that Australia's salvation depended on the United States, not the United Kingdom. The contributing academics write compellingly about Japanese intentions, the bombing of Darwin, the critical defense of Milne Bay, the terrible battles of Buna, Gona, Sanananda, and Kokoda. Other chapters highlight the defense of Australia's east coast, the internment of Japanese in country, the effects of the rapid growth of American troops in the country, and the importance of the Battle of the Coral Sea as a strategic turning point.
