I think The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi is a great and wonderful book for people who like first person

Speaking for myself, I think The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi is a great and wonderful book for people who like first person, twists, and really descriptive words. The first overall reason is that the novel is first person told through Charlotte Doyle, and you can hear the narrator’s thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The narrator says things like, “I could only gaze upon the ship.” She also said, “I wanted to run after him, to cry”. That is some of Charlotte’s thoughts. Hearing Charlotte’s thoughts helps me feel what she’s going through.
Another reason is I like how this book has lots of twists. The twists make the book more exciting. For example, a crew mate, Zachariah, who pretended to die, but he was alive in the hold. Another twist is a crew member who goes behind the crew’s back by telling the captain about everything he knows. I can list many more twists but that will fill pages.
The last, but not least, reason I like this novel is the great imagery the author includes in the text. Some examples are “his arms and legs were as thin as marlinspikes” and “his face was as wrinkled as a crumbled napkin, was flecked with the stubble of his white fluffy beard.” Another one is “When he smiled-for that is what I assumed he was attempting-he offered only a scattering of stumps.” Do you see how you can actually picture this old sailor? I strongly believe this is a tremendous novel that all 5th graders should get a chance to read, for the three reasons that it is in 1st person, there are many twists, and the novel has great imagery.

Great study guide

I bought this study guide to help my nephew with his novel homework, so I could know the book he was reading as well. It gives good summaries of each chapter, describes characters, which I had to refer to often, and good ideas for concept connections. The only reason for the 4 stars is that it did not work on my Kindle Touch, but did work on my Kindle Fire, so I was promptly reimbursed for the price of the study guide and was able to keep it on my Fire. Great customer service!

Misleading

I bought this book believing that the training would be directed specifically for the dachshund breed, but it is all general information. It's fine if you are looking for basic dog training, but not if you want training tailored specifically for the personality of the dachshund breed. I wouldn't recommend this book, as most of the information can be found on the internet, as it is all general.

I thought there would be far more information on potty training. I would much rather have seen now and less about taking dogs in the show ring which Melia small minority end up doing. Disappointing.

Excellent Book that should be read by all!! Agenda 21 is so difficult to explain to most people because it comes across as a 'conspiracy theory' but it is not! This book is full of the right information to get people to, at least, start paying attention. If we can get them to get interested in this world changing HOAX, maybe it can be stopped. Great read!

Nice to meet the Brownlees.
Down to earth very hard workers who reached the top by working harder when others went inside.
No great surprises and relatively simple language but its not rocket science, its sport.
Would have liked more detail on their training specifics.

As quick a read as a sprint triathlon. Tells the story of how they got to the Olympic podium but not too much of any weight or substance. Expensive for what it is.

If you are a Brownlee fan you will like the book

I thought the book was ok. I found it interesting how two brothers trained together and pushed each other, but didn't think it merited a book to discuss it. I was at the London Olympics and in the bleachers watching the race, so maybe the excitement of being there in person jaded my view of the book. I agree that they were born into a great situation and I admire that they took advantage of it but not sure the book stayed on that. If you are a Brownlee fan you will enjoy it. They are great athletes either way if not good authors.

Wish I had noticed it was a reprint

I am a big Nora Roberts fan also like her JD Robb series. But his book is very disappointing. At first didn't understand why it's like an outline almost. Characters are likable but not fleshed out. Pace seems very fast for a NR book. And the characters conversations are weak. Then I read other reviews that it's one of her early books. Now understand why it's such a weak read. It was written before her skills matured. Still unhappy that she and her editor didn't do a rewrite before republishing it. Haven't gotten very far and not sure if I will bother to finish it.

CAVEAT EMPTOR. This book is a reprint of a very early NR story.

I was excited to finally have this 'new' book auto-delivered to my Kindle, and I started reading it almost as soon as it arrived (I was just so glad to be over the Boonesboro trilogy!).

But as I read, I kept thinking that something must have happened to NR. The writing was so, well, bad! The characters are poorly developed, the story starts with very little background, sections bounce back and forth from one character's POV to the other's, descriptive words are repeated frequently (sometimes within two or three sentences). There were just so many basic writing flaws that the story wasn't flowing at all for me.

I tried to stick with it, thinking that it just HAD to improve. With the amount of gratuitous sex between the heroine and hero, coupled with the way the heroine swooped in and immediately found her way into the heart of the hero's orphaned niece, I thought that I was reading some weird experimental mash-up of Fifty Shades of Grey and The Sound of Music. Maybe NR was trying out some bizarre literary style?

And then I got to the chapter where the H&H go to New York. And she goes shopping at Gimbels. WHAT??? That store has been closed for decades! I quickly went to the title page and, lo and behold.... this book is 30 years old! Or nearly that anyway. And very dated. Written when Ms. Roberts was just learning the ropes, long before she'd hit her stride as the (usually) wonderful story-teller that she's become.

So.... fair warning. This book is NOT NEW. Some may like it, but I didn't. And I'm very sorry that I didn't know that it was a reprint before I spent the money for it. Buyer beware.

No more bait and switch, Nora

I love Nora Roberts books, even collect them and stalk the bookstore waiting for a new book to be released. That being said, her and her publishers need to stop trying to pass off her old titles as new books by changing the titles, many times lumping two of the older titles together under a new title, and then putting an updated cover on them. This is just another form of bait and switch in order to make money from the consumer. Don't ruin a good thing, Nora, either keep writing new books or retire and let people make the conscience decision to buy older titles, without the deception.
