This book is among the best I have read for Illinois history. I was looking for a focus on the life of women, at a certain time and place. This book provided all three: written by a woman, late nineteenth century and central Illinois. It is believeable and detailed.
The writing style was clear and easy to read. It makes a good reference in my library.

Read This First!

These books are out of order. I was halfway through the second one when I realized it was really the third in the series. This ruined the third (really second) book for me since much of the plot was revisited in the second (really third) book. I ended up just skimming the last book (really second) to confirm I already knew where it was going. A real bummer! Other than this I do recommend these books and this author. Great, character driven stories with excellent plot twists and misdirection. However this was no bargain since the twists were already revealed. Buy this book, then read it in the correct order.

The chronilogical order of these 3 books

I found it unfortunate that the editor for this series did not place the books in this series in order. For example: "Copper River" follows "Mercy Falls" but instead of that sequencing, Copper River was the next in the kindle format after "Blood Hallow". I found it quite frustrating to come in to a very obvious gap in the "narrative" (an entire book"s worth) and wonder when those gaps would be filled.....not until the next book. By then it was clear and it spoiled someof the drama to know the "ending". I would request a more thourough editing from your staff in the future. Thanks

Wrong order!

I really like these mysteries, but whoever put this collection together put Copper River (actually the sixth book overall) SECOND in the collection, and Mercy Falls THIRD (this book is actually the fifth book overall). By the time I realized they were out of order it ruined Mercy Falls for me. If you get this collection, skip over Copper River and read Mercy Falls first. In Copper River, they give away what happened very, very early, plus I kept thinking what the heck is going on here?!? These two go together quite a bit, much more so than in his other books, sadly. What a bummer!

Charlie the owl is not like the rest. He can't sit still, he has to dance. Which drives everyone else nuts, so off he must go on a new home hunt. He spies so many still animals, will he always be lost? No, there's a tree with a jubilant lot! Is this where he belongs?

Who has children? And boys especially? The smooth rhyming prose and colorful fun pictures got mine's attention and we sat mostly still for the short bit it took to read this. As fantastic as the first, and I especially enjoy how all three stories intertwine with each other to teach love and acceptance.

I'm studying about 'changes' with my 4 year old class. This story talks about changes of the seasons, what happens to us when we are afraid - things are not usually what they seem. Changes that take place when we can humble ourselves and say sorry - even the confidence that somes to us when we make things right with those around us. Even the changes that can take place when we take a stand for what we believe is right in helping others. The picture is colorful and easy to read and understand! My fours LOVE it!!

For the first eight or ten years of my ministry I did not know my English Bible as I should have known it, a fact to which my own spiritual life and the character of my pulpit ministrations bore depressing witness. [Side note: The Bible in the Seminary] Nor was I so fortunate as to meet with more than one or two brethren in the ministry who knew their English Bible very much better than I knew mine. They all declared that the theological seminaries did not profess to teach the English Bible. They taught much about the Bible of great importance for ministers to know, such as the Hebrew and Greek tongues, the principles of exegesis and interpretation, the history of the text, and the proofs and illustrations of Christian doctrine; but, in the words of one of the ministers referred to (which have appeared in print), "while we had some special lessons in one or two of the epistles, several of the psalms, in some of the prophecies, and in a few select portions of the gospels, other and vastly important parts of the Bible were left out altogether. We had nothing on the book of Revelation, no elaborate study of the Mosaic ritual and its profound system of types, and especially were we left uninitiated into the minute and wonderful co-ordination of parts in the various books of the Old and New Testaments, which disclose a stupendous divine plan running through the whole, linking them all together as an indissoluble unit and carrying with them an amazing power of conviction."

About the Author
JAMES GRAY was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba and raised in Winnipeg. He began his journalism career during the Depression, writing for several Western periodicals and as a member of the Ottawa press corps. He began writing autobiographical social histories of the Prairies in the 1960s, work that ultimately won him the Canadian National History Society's Pierre Berton Award. He died in 1998.

The Preface to Expository Preaching

How does one study anything, let alone the Bible? Read it. Then, read it again. And again.

Unlike the mountain of books promising to teach us troglodytes how to understand the Bible, usually with page after page of padding meant only to satisfy a contractual word count, Dr. Gray offers a concise explanation of what every reader needs to do to understand the Bible: read it, and do so repeatedly!

There is a systematic approach he posits, but I won't ruin the surprise.

Don't let the age of this exhortation put you off. Its advice defies expiration. And, as such, its application is atemporal and universal. If you want to understand any piece of writing, you must read multiple times.

Fifteen to twenty times is best.

With respect to expository preaching, Dr. Gray believes that a preacher ought to preach as a reader ought to read: one word, one verse, one chapter after another. Even topical preachers, says Dr. Gray, like Spurgeon, ensure that scripture is foundation and pinnacle of the topic.

And how do preachers ensure that scripture is paramount? They must know it. And to know is to have read it. Over and over and over.
