I'd like more than an ounce of prevention.

I was hoping for more specific suggestions as to how to avoid being destroyed financially when what appears to be the inevitable hyperinflation occurs. Maybe I was a little disappointed because I read so much on this topic that there isn't much I haven't already read or heard OR because there isn't any way to totally avoid the destruction that obama is bringing to this country.

No shiny fluff here!

I read The Fourth Deadly Sin before I knew of Sins 1-3. I won't let 1-3 go unread. Lawrence Sanders' style of crime prose captivated me first with Anderson Tapes' crime reporter-type story telling. The Passion Of Molly T. made me a complete fan. The Fourth Sin is unlike any crime drama that I've ever read. The vivid descriptions and Sanders' use of intelligent language (I admit, I needed a thesaurus several times) allow you to view Delaney, his wife Monica, Abner Boone and other characters as if you were beside them at all times. Not a single character in this book is cardboard. All are shown with flesh and soul. And with all this detail, the plot still moves you like a locomotive. Magestically gaining speed, rolling though the hills and valleys and screaming it's whistle at top speed towards the end. Sanders is good. Really good!

Sandwich Killer

I hate to break up the bashing-session for Lawrence Sanders' FOURTH DEADLY SIN, but...well, no, I don't, actually. This prolific and unfortunately half-forgotten author deserves better than to be called a hack, and the book in question is much better than it is being given credit for here. In fact, it was this novel which turned me onto Lawrence Sanders, one of the best pure prose-writers of his or any other generation.

Like any successful writer, especially of easy-read bestsellers, Sanders was under a lot of pressure from his publishers to churn out copy, and was therefore capable of firing up a cigar, doing a shot of Bushmills, and pounding his typewriter until it coughed up the required 250 pages - quality be damned. Throttling your muse in this fashion seldom coughs up anything of lasting value: I remember reading THE TIMOTHY FILES and, with the exception of some of the descriptive writing, thinking it was the literary equivalent of eating popcorn and cotton candy for dinner. It may taste good going down, but where the F is the substance?

My answer to that, however, is "So what?" Sanders (who died in 1998) was writing in a genre with clearly-defined rules, rules which often all but preclude plot originality, character depth, or thoughtful prose, except in the most skillful and economical of novelists. Yet he managed to produce all three on a regular basis, and THE FOURTH DEADLY SIN is actually a pretty good example of all of those traits.

The DEADLY SIN series, four books in length, revolved around a retired (for the last three books) New York Chief of Detectives named Edward X. Delaney. Delaney, whose greatest passion is a well-made sandwich, is precisely the sort of old-school, thick-skinned, cigar-chewing detective you'd hate to share a cab with in real life, but as a reader, you can't get enough of. The crusty cop exterior is misleading, however; he's intelligent, well-read, has surprisingly expensive tastes, and is actually quite sensitive when he isn't reaming out uncooperative witnesses with expletive-ridden tirades. Bored by his early retirement, Delaney isn't unhappy about occasionally being tapped by his old friend and mentor, Deputy Superintendant Thorsen, to tackle the occasional unsolved homicide "under the radar." The fact that he's paid in Scotch is just a bonus.

The plot of T4DS, in a nutshell, is this: A wealthy, well-connected shrink named Ellerbee is murdered with a hammer in his Manhattan office, and the suspect list is as long as his Rolodex. Thorsen's protégé in the NYPD, Deputy Chief Suarez, is up for a big promotion but unable to crack the high-profile case, and that is making the ambitious Thorsen look like a sucker who backed the wrong horse. In hopes of rescuing his golden boy's reputation, and strengthening his own position in the Department, Thorsen puts the now-civilian Delaney on the job. The old Irishman must sift through crazy suspects to find a killer who might be even crazier - or just as sane as he is.

T4DS is a fairly straightforward whodunnit, differing from 1 and 3, which were actually psychological studies of the murderer; and it does recycle characters, and in some cases, entire passages of dialogue, from prior SINS. But since it was actually the first book in the series I ever read, and since the books themselves are meant to be stand-alones, I don't let this bother me too much and neither should you. The real reason to read any Sanders book is for the beautiful and evocative writing - when Sanders describes something, you see it, be it a gorgeous blonde, an ice-cold beer, or a New York street. The atmosphere of 1980s Manhattan is perfectly captured by his pen, and it isn't a cliché to say the city itself is a major character in the novel. If some of the others turn out to be right out of Central Casting, it doesn't detract much from the read.

The animosity towards this novel seems silly to me. Sanders was a formula writer, yes, but the formula was damn good. His sheer skill elevated the material, but even when it didn't, he was still no hack. In 4DS, he may not have produced anything more than a page-turning potboiler, but who gives a damn, when his description of a triple-decker sandwhich can actually make you hungry?

Extremely Readable; Wacko Patients & Police Vigilanty Justice Interesting!

I enjoyed reading my very first Lawrence Sanders novel: The Fourth Deadly Sin published in 1984 in hardcover by G.P. Putnam and Sons. I liked the fact that Sanders worked so hard to make the novel reader-friendly; I liked reading about the six murder suspects and their fascinating, odd-ball mental illnesses; I especially liked the two incidents of vigilanty justice administered at the hands of the police, at the expense of the criminals.

The novel is all about finding the identity of the person(s)who ball-peen-hammered-to-death Dr. Simon Ellerbee, eminent New York psychiatrist at a hastly called 9:00 PM appointment/session set by the Dr. and one of his patients who could turn out to be the murderer/peener. As if Ellerbee's brutal murder wasn't bad enough, the good Dr. was rolled over on his back following his death/peening, and popped one last time in each eye with the peening end of the hammer.

There were a few things about the novel that troubled me: that Edward X. Delaney, Chief of Detectives in charge of the criminal investigation was older/retired and seemed so laid back. But at the same time, I enjoyed his methodical, but leisurely approach at discovering and assembling the complete "jigsaw picture puzzle" of clues to the crime. Another troubling point: That three quarters of the novel passed without a real clue as to who the killer was. This left me with a sinking feeling that Delaney's methodical approach might not work if the selected suspects were all innocent. And near the end of the novel when the killer's indentity was known, I realized how Delaney (and myself) had been set up by the killer and Lawrence Sanders.

Good thing it's inexpensive

There is always so much hype with these products, then basically they all say the same thing: make yourself happy/busy/interesting and not always available. That men always want the chase first, then if you're spruced up nicely and easy going yet a little hard to get, you'll get your man. Oh, but if you don't, he wasn't worth getting in the first place. So the amazing formula to make him want you is only amazing if he is interested in the first place and happens to be a decent guy. Don't be clingy, don't be bossy, don't act like his mom, and don't give up your life for him (you'll be "boring.").

In this, it's said there's basically no man ever who will be exclusive after the first date - ever. They all want to feel like they're competing for a woman. Those kind of generalizations bother me. Same with a comment later saying the man will be so embarrassed he didn't bring up being your boyfriend that he'll make it up to you in spades. Really?

Encouraging people to be their best is fine, yet somehow it still had a sexist tone to it when advising to keep working out even after getting your man, wear makeup, not sweats all the time, etc., like the relationship must be pretty fragile if gaining weight and wearing your hair in a ponytail could cause him to not love you anymore.

I can see this being somewhat helpful for someone new to dating and dating advice. Otherwise, it's just another in a long line of hyped up "Get Your Man!" kind of things you can purchase. I think women who do not have the man they want and who are looking for advice, would benefit from a different kind of insight, not the same old, same old (50s advice w/a modern twist).

I am giving one star for the book and zero for the rest, purely because the video links in the book offering to provide more "tips and tricks," actually make you waste 40 minutes of your life by listening to the author repeat over and over again what these "tips and tricks" can do, but not what they actually are. When you've spent 40 minutes waiting for them to be revealed, you are told to buy another product which will reveal them. Scam.

When it comes to making a person feel good about themselves this book explains that and more. A lot of times we as women forget how to be that prize and allow a man to treat us with the up most respect. Being independent doesn't mean that your not a lady it just means that we are confident about who we are and we choose to be with a man because we want to not because we have to, there's a difference and this book explains the importance of that.

Amazon should be ashamed of themselves!

I wanted to replace my hardcover copy of HG Wells' Outline of History with a digital version, but the copy I bought from Amazon was a huge disappointment. It hadn't been given even a cursory proofreading. I was prepared to put up with the typos, numerous though they were, but when I realized there were whole blocks of text totally garbled or missing, I demanded a refund. The book was cheap, but I'd sooner pay more for an intact book that's been properly proofread. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for selling an e-book in such shoddy condition. This has really lowered my opinion of them.

I have had my 2nd edition of Wells 'Outline Of History' for over 30 years.

This is the 1st book I put on my KFHD, not this one but the one narrated by Bernard Mayes, who has such a excellent voice for the writings of this precious book.

It's so wonderful having it read to me hearing the pronouncing of words I've never heard, and reading along with him with my old book.
Then I found a 3rd edition online making it easier to just read that one while I listen to Mayes read.
The book looks just like mine with with the yellowed pages, I just love it so much to be able to read it on my HFHD HFHD while listening to Mayes read.

I purchased this one just because it was there. I can't never get enough of this precious book.

The world would be a better place if everyone read this book and know the TRUE HISTORY and not the fables we were taught in school.

Ormond Simpson is currently a Fellow of the University of London Centre for Distance Education, UK. His most recent post was at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand where he was Visiting Professor. Funny, Sexy and a Rollicking Good Time!

This very funny book is the story of Rachel, a journalist-turned-standup comic who is engaged to an extremely uptight dentist, whose ex-husband left her for a male Estee Lauder rep, whose 10 year old son has a bizarre passion for Barbra Streisand, whose employers are rather eccentric members of London's glitterati, whose mother appears to be having a fling with a toy boy ... well, anyway, she has lots going on in her life. And then comes the washing machine repair man who adds an entirely new and rather steamy dimension to her life! This is a fun read with lots going on and tons of colourful characters to keep the reader entertained. I loved it.

If you like your books funny, sexy, saucy, naughty and fun, set your sights on Sue Margolis's newest offer, Spin Cycle. It has all these elements plus some, and sends readers on a riotous, raunchy ride.
Spin Cycle tells the story of budding stand-up comic, Rachel Katz. She's had all sorts of problems: her husband is gay, her fiance is a compulsive neat-freak dentist, her 10-year-old son has an unnatural obsession with Barbra Streisand, and her mother is acting in a most unlikely way. On the plus side, she has her comedy; her bohemian pregnant friend, Shelley; and her job cleaning house for oddcouple of the year, celebrities Otto and Xantia Marx. Enter Matt Clapton. When the Marx's washing machine goes on the blink, sexy repairman Matt comes to the rescue. Suddenly, Rachel finds herself in quite a predicament -- if her fiance is off working in South Africa for a month, is it okay to indulge herself in matters of a sexual nature? Especially since her fiance hasn't given her the time of day in weeks?
I really enjoyed this book. It has some good humor, although not necessarily knee-slapping. The stand-up comedy bits are funny, though, and I spent many moments reciting the jokes to my husband in my best stand-up comedian voice. I will admit to the storyline being tied up too neatly, and it is horribly predictable, but for readers who don't mind such things, Spin Cycle will be another great novel on your bookshelf.

A wickedly delightful comedy

This isn't the side-splitting laughter book I expected like her first book, Neurotica, but it is funny, sweet, erotic and just plainly delightful!!
Rachel, a struggling stand-up comedian, was in the midst of a so-so relationship with a dentist when she met Matt, the washing machine repairman. And the story takes off from there, with parents whom she suspects are swingers in their "old age," an ex-husband who left her for another man, a son who is wildly in love with Barbra Streisland, a comedy competition that soured because someone stole her material .... and falling in love with Matt. It is an entertaining love story ... one that will linger in your mind after reading it.
Sue Margolis is known for her racy books injected with British humor, and this book doesn't disappoint!! I can't wait to read more of her books!! She is one British author I am keeping on the top of my list. If it's a gray and rainy day outside, then I'll be sure to pick up one of her books ~~ she's entertaining enough to keep the blahs away for a few hours!

About the Author
Tom Altstiel (M.A., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is owner/partner of Prom Krog Altstiel, Inc., an integrated marketing communications service provider (responsible for creative strategy and tactics, including copywriting, video and broadcast production, Web development, interactive programs, client service and new business development). In addition, since 1999, Altstiel has taught part-time at Marquette University, including such courses as Copywriting, Advanced Copywriting, and Campaigns (with emphasis on AAF competition). He has won more than 185 local, regional and national creative awards and serves on several judging panels for national award competitions. In 2003, Altstiel received the Dean's Award for Outstanding Part Time Faculty for the College of Communication at Marquette University.

Jean Grow (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison; M.A., University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point; B.F.A., The School of the Art Institute of Chicago) is an Associate Professor of Advertising at Marquette University. Grow has received a number of teaching awards including third place in AEJMC's 2002 Promising Professors Competition. She has worked with such clients as Coca-Cola, USA, Kellogg USA, and Kimberly-Clark. She is former Director of Marketing for Apple Studios and heads her own advertising consulting finn, Grow Creative Resources. Her articles have appeared in the following journals: Women's Studies in Communication; Qualitative Health Research; Journal of Consumer Marketing; Journal of Business Ethics; Journal of Communication Inquiry; and Journal of Advertising Education.

From an advertising student's point of view

Very clear, thorough, and relevant. Very well written and actually fun to read. It's like three books condensed into one, without loosing any substance.

I'm happy to say that this book is now going to be used as a required textbook in our program.

Buy this book. Especially If you are an advertising student. Because it covers everything and also it will fill in any gaps between different classes. Best $60 I ever spent for school.

Great for learning

Being a creative personality makes reading textbooks excrutiatingly boring for me. The great this about this book is that it never made me feel that way! Maybe it's because of it's creative layout, excessive pictures, and interesting subject matter but I have no trouble reading this book at all. Definitely recommend it for anyone who plans on going into this field because it's extremely comprehensive and not at all boring like most text books!

Great book.

I used this for class. I like the way it gets right to the point with its subject matter. No in depth analysis about how advertising or design came to be, just bulleted facts of what you should know or learn. Its a great resource tool review to give you that extra kick to get you out of your funk and back into creating. The companion website is defunct though, I think it would have provide more insight if you wanted to dig deeper into a particular topic. Overall, a good book to add to my library.

About the Author
Heine (1797-1856) was a journalist, essayist, and one of the most significant German Romantic poets. He is remembered chiefly for his lyric poems, many of which were set to music in the form of lieder (art songs) by Germanic composers, including Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss, and Richard Wagner.

Untermeyer is a poet, biographer and critic and also America's most creative anthologist. Born in New York City, he failed to graduate high school and taught himself music, art and literature. He became poet in residence at various universities, writer for the Office of War Information, editor of the Armed Services Editions, and, after World War II, editor for a leading record company. He was appointed Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress for two years and was sent by the State Department to India, where he represented the United States at cultural conferences.

Forgotten Books

The Poems of Heinrich Heine. I saw some quotes from this book in the Jewish Museum in Berlin but was unable to buy an English version. Once home I ordered it through Amazon and I am very pleased with the book.
