HGenerally acknowledged as a major influence on Bram Stoker's Dracula, this novel, originally published in 1872, is the very first vampire thriller. Le Fanu, often compared to Poe, was a Victorian writer whose tales of the occult have inspired horror writers for more than a century. Seemingly by happenstance, the mysterious and beautiful Carmilla comes to stay with the young and virtuous Laura. Laura, who has been living a lonely existence with her father in an isolated castle, finds herself enchanted with her exotic visitor. As the two become close friends, however, Laura dreams of nocturnal visitations and begins to lose her physical strength. Through much investigation, the gruesome truth about Carmilla and her family is revealed. Though the basic premise of the story, that of evil targeting pure innocence, is familiar to anyone who is vampire savvy, this haunting tale is surprisingly fresh, avoids clich? and builds well to its climax. Particularly interesting are the sexual overtones that develop between the two women. Follows's reading is flawless. In particular, her ability to capture Laura's na?vet? so convincingly will have listeners feeling almost as shocked as Laura as the unwholesome truth unravels. (Sept.)

Don't Stop At the Introduction- Inside is a Delightful Surprise!

The book starts with an introduction in dense, florid 19th century prose that probably throws off half the people who try to read it. Then the story begins and the style completely changes to something quite readable. And fun! It really is a good, old-fashioned horror story. I'd also assumed the notorious lesbian undertones would be so subtle they'd be almost undetectable, but I was actually pretty surprised. Not that the book is explicit, but there is more voluptuous description of kisses and caresses than I expected between two women in a Victorian novel. But the real punch comes from the horror aspects of the novel. The well-worn gothic imagery of isolated castles, flickering candles and horses rearing in the moonlight actually feels fresh when encountered what is practically their original context. If you're a fan of vampire fiction, you'll probably get a kick out of seeing elements destined to define the genre appear on the page for the first time. The scenes where the vampire makes its nocturnal visits are crisp and effective, evoking visuals that easily match the best films. And while the denouement is both somewhat corny and yet over too quickly, I found the vampire's death rather jarring. If you have any appetite for 19th century novels and/or vampires, "Carmilla" is a quick, enjoyable read and offers plenty of bloodsucking bang for your buck.

Chilling

I'll admit to having some difficulties with the syntax of this story....it was written in 1872 after all. The way the story progresses with Carmilla acting much like a herding dog that cuts just one sheep from the others is very chilling. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Wish it was a novel and not a short story. Really enjoyed it. Very well written and refreshing to read. This was the first popularized vampire story, and one of the best. Haunting and hard to put down.
