For the ins, the outs, the in-betweens, and the stuff you didn't even know you didn't know about of your Kindle Fire
By orangee1
For any of my devices they cover, the Missing Manual books are my go to series to make sure I'm getting the most out of my devices. The reason for this is simple. They are as close to comprehensive as you can get and they are laid out intuitively to get you from identifying what you don't know or what you want to look up through implementing that feature. There may be other series out there with more thorough walk throughs (My Kindle Fire (My...) has great walkthroughs and more button by button labeled images), but if you don't need quite that level of hand holding, you will (usually) get a lot more bang for you dollar with the Missing Manual series in terms of both content depth and insightful commentary.
So that's my experience with the series and that experience contributed to the lofty expectations I had when I picked up this book. So far it has not disappointed.
Explanations are clear and concise. Pictures are not only crisp and nice to look at, but are usually relevant to what is being explained hand and really do enhance learning and understanding (something I've found not to necessarily be the case with all books). The commentary on different functions and applications provides greater insight into the Kindle Fire than I'd imagine 90+% of users have. It not only lets you know what's worth mastering and really understanding, but also what features are lacking and could be improved upon with a third party app.
The author has an obvious sense of humor and it comes through in the writing. He jokes about how the power button on the new HD kindle fire can be difficult to find because it sits so flush on the body and how (while most things you can find a solution to) this is not one of them. Is it the most helpful insight? Probably not; a solution to every problem imaginable would have been better, but its nice to know that the things that frustrate you are frustrating other people too and you aren't alone. Overall I thought the humor was a good way of making what could be an intimidating 300 page manual very approachable.
The book itself covers nearly all ability levels and scales (from the basics and big picture like how do I use the touch screen to complex and the minute details like how should I tweak my email settings to squeeze out just a bit more productivity).
The book is broken into 5 parts and each part is broken into individual chapters:
**Part 1 is all about reading covering pretty much everything you'd want to know about reading books, newspapers, magazines, and even spreadsheets and text documents for work. It also covers the Kindle Fire's audiobook capabilities quite well.
**Part 2 is all about the other media you'll want to use (watch/listen). The chapters here discuss streaming tv and movies, playing with photos and videos, and listening to music.
**Part 3 discusses email, managing contacts and you calendar as well as web browsing.
**Part 4 was about apps and was one of the more helpful sections for me (which is strange since I usually think that its impossible to write a section that narrows down all of the possible apps you could buy to just a few), but the author succeeds because he points out the shortcomings of the built in apps and tools and directs you to more well rounded apps. Are there apps out there that you'll want or need that aren't covered? Absolutely. You'll have to find those yourself, but by forgoing those apps and focusing on broadly applicable apps the author makes a section that's really worthwhile.
**Part 5 is a mix of 3 Appendixes that cover settings, troubleshooting, and topics specific to the larger 8.9" kindle fire. While not the most stimulating reads, if you run into any issues this is a great place to start looking for a solution and you'll be glad they were included.
All of the content is well laid out and based on the very strong (and at least on my computer highly searchable) the book could be used just as well as a reference guide as a cover-to-cover read.
Overall I thought the content lived up to the high standard set by the missing manual series. The walk throughs were strong and engaged in just the right amount of "hand holding" that made me feel confident that I could use any feature I put my mind to (if you want more button by button guides you may want to look elsewhere). Most importantly the commentary was on point and made the book both approachable and more valuable to me than competing guides. Anyone can tell you how to do something, but most guides don't take the time to tell you that there just isn't a great way to do it (and they're just as frustrated as you are) or that you can do it, but that it will be easier with a third party app.
For the person that wants to know the ins, the outs, and the in-betweens of their new Kindle Fire this is the guide for you.
