Survival was the last thing on his mind.

Then, a strange cloud appeared over the city. A cloud that kept growing. The darkness on the horizon consumed the light around it. And Nick’s dad, a Department of Defense energy physicist, might have something to do with it. Soon, it became clear that the world Nick knew would never be the same.

Now, night is never-ending. The temperature is falling as heat leaves the world. Plants and animals are dying and people are turning into predators waiting for any small advantage. But Nick is determined not to disappear like the fading light. Desperate to glimpse a familiar face in the shadows, Nick races to find his friends—and the one clue that’s his glimmer of hope.

Major disappointment
By M. Desoer
I read "The Nightworld" because I enjoyed the author's other book, "Helper 12." I also like post-Apocalyptic/dystopian stories, so this one seemed right up my alley.

Unfortunately, "The Nightworld" was a huge let-down. I only kept reading because (a) I kept thinking "this must get better" and (b) it is a short book. The story follows a teenage boy as darkness descends on the world (we're never quite sure if it is worldwide). While a bit of mystery is great, the problem is we are never told why or how the sky has grown dark (not a cloud, supposedly) or who was responsible (if anyone). The son's father gives him a secret "device" he has made, but we never find out what it does, if it could "cure" the problem or something else let alone why the father hasn't used it to "fix" things. If this information is supposed to come in a sequel, I'm sorry but I won't read it.

To top it off, I'm willing to to suspend belief: in other words, I'll "go with" the concept of darkness descending. What I can't suspend is common sense: why would people, within 24 hours of the phenomenon, flee their homes? Where would they be going? And why would the entire country descend into an immediate state of chaos, with marauding gangs committing murder left and right, just for the fun of it? Yes, I know things got chaotic in New Orleans after the hurricane, but people around the country are better known for rallying together in times of natural disasters (and there was no indication in the story that there was any reason to believe the darkness was anything but temporary). Where are the police? Where is the National Guard? The Armed Forces? It is as if all law enforcement and civilized behavior vanished overnight. (Yes, the kid starts reading "Lord of the Flies" in the beginning of the book, but any parallels are not credible.)

The biggest problem is that, despite all this, the book... is... incredibly... slow... The dialogue, mostly between teens, is inane.

I fully realize that this is a "young adult" book, but this does not excuse its flaws. I've loved a lot of young adult fiction I've recently read (I have a teen daughter). This one just does not make the cut.

Reminiscent of Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
By The Compulsive Reader
Nick is used to taking care of himself; his mother has been dead for years, and his father is a scientist who is constantly absorbed in his work. Now it's the beginning of summer vacation, and Nick just wants to hang with his friends and try to get a date with his crush, Lara...but his dad is suddenly acting weird and over-protective. Then a dense, dark cloud appears in the horizon one night. It rapidly covers the sky, blocking out the sun, and it doesn't go away. It's completely gloomy 24/7, and Nick finds himself suddenly alone in this dark new world. Piecing together clues left by his father, Nick struggles to make sense of what's going and survive the best he can with his friends.

Jack Blaine's latest book is a riveting and thrilling read. Nick is a great believable narrator--he's smart, witty, and he thinks on his feet. He has to undergo a lot of change and a lot of heartbreak in a short amount of time, but he never gives up. Through unexplained violence, theft, and the revelation of shocking secrets about his father, Nick keeps moving forward, trying to figure out what his next move should be when no one has any answers. He eventually finds his way to Lara, and the two of them team up to try to figure out how to get to safety and determine what the objects left behind by Nick's father mean. If there is even a way to ever reverse the darkness, they've got the best chance to figure it out. The tension and sharp action will keep even the most reluctant reader hooked as Nick finds that when faced with death, people can be cruel and calculating. With themes of fear, humanity, compassion, and courage, The Nightworld is a quick, edge-of-your-seat read that is reminiscent of Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and an open ending that leaves room for more.

Nightworld
By Krista Cubicleblindness
Going into the story I couldn't help but be reminded of some of the post-apocalyptic novels I have read recently, such as Ashfall by Mike Mullen and Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts.
This book was not quite as long or intense as those reads, but I definitely got the same kind of vibe. A boy who's father hides him in a closet when he fears a group of people are coming for him, witnesses his fathers death. Before shooting him they ask for a device, which he refuses to help them find. In a panic he decides to go to his friends abandoned house to hide out until things cool down some. There has just been a recent event that has caused a dark cloud to hang over the city, several people have left and murders and stealing has run rampant. When he starts to run out of food he decides it's time to move on and find different shelter and food. He also gains a companion, a dog.
There is the mystery of the black cloud, the device and what his father was doing that caused the men to come after him. It seems that the device the men were looking for maybe something Nick can get his hands on and save the world.
There is a romance and Nick makes both friends and enemies as he tries to figure out what is going on.
It is a pretty interesting and sometimes intense read, not anything that would give you nightmares, it does have a cliffhanger ending though and I anticipate a lot of action and activity going on in book 2.
