Exclusive Interview Between Lee Child and Clyde Phillips
Lee Child, internationally best-selling author of the Jack Reacher thrillers (the latest in the series, Never Go Back, is available now), recently sat down with author Clyde Phillips to discuss his reentry into mystery writing, his success with the show "Dexter," and the beauty of a juicy twist at the end of a novel.
Lee Child: I was a huge fan of the first three books in this series. I thought those were fantastic. As strong as anything in the genre. But then you disappeared. I’ve had that happen to a lot of writers I like. Either they die. Or they go into rehab. But you had a better reason for disappearing...Read the rest of this review at www.kindlepost.com.

In Phillips's exciting fourth crime novel to feature San Francisco homicide cops Kenny Marks and Jane Candiotti (after 2003's Sacrifice), the dynamic husband-and-wife team take on a case that shakes Kenny to the very core. In a shooting at a local restaurant, six are found dead—and, to the shock of Kenny and Jane, among the dead is Kenny's teenage nephew, Bobby. Despite their connection to one of the victims, Kenny fights to be put on the case, and Jane promises—at risk to her career—to supervise him. Their heart-pounding, personal investigation puts not only the lives of the two cops in danger but also the life of their future child. Jane's involvement, despite her pregnancy, gives her resolve more pathos, especially as she accepts the aid of an ex-con, Edgar Silva, who seems to know something about the case. Phillips keeps readers guessing until the very end, even if, on occasion, his sense of timing feels unnaturally perfect. (Aug.)
From Booklist
*Starred Review* A midday mass murder in the fast-food eatery Stella’s stuns San Francisco, particularly since one of the six victims is the 18-year-old nephew of Homicide Inspector Kenny Marks, husband of Lieutenant Jane Candiotti, who heads the case. Although there are similarities to recent robberies at two other Stella’s in the city, Jane and her team look to the victims for motives. When a promising lead peters out and the sole potential witness is murdered, Jane and Kenny risk their careers by turning for help to Edgar Silva, former gangbanger and ex-con with valuable connections in the criminal world, and whose younger brother also died in the massacre. Jane is three months pregnant with her first child—and candid with her hard-nosed chief about how her condition affects her ability to land a murderer—as she drives herself toward finding the killer. Meanwhile, she shows humanizing sensitivity to the trauma of the two patrolmen who were first on the scene. In his fourth mystery featuring Candiotti (after Sacrifice, 2003), television executive Phillips delivers a solid police procedural with an action-fueled plot marked by unexpected twists and featuring a protagonist who’s a true modern woman—a winning combination. --Michele Leber

A great read.
By DWD's Reviews
To be released in August 2013 by Thomas and Mercer
This is my 1,000th review on my blog. I have several good books that are already read and just waiting to be reviewed, but only one could be my 1,000th review. This is the best of that small bunch of books and it is really quite good.
This is the fourth book in a series of books about married San Francisco homicide detectives Jane Candiotti and Kenny Marks. I had not read any books in the series until this one and the reader does not have to read them in order to join in.
Cadndiotti and Marks are called in to a nasty murder scene in a fast food restaurant. Six strangers are massacred in the basement storage area right after the lunch rush. They have nothing in common except for the way they died. To make everything much, much worse, one of the victims is Marks' nephew.
The San Francisco Police Department starts to sort through the clues and work through the pasts of all of the victims looking for a motive and their search leads them to a former gang member who is conducting an investigation of his own and he promises to deal with the murderer in his own way...
This story grabs you from the first moment and pulls you right through. I flew through this book and I was genuinely surprised by who actually committed the murders and the ending is quite satisfying.
Disclosure: the publisher sent me an advance reader's copy of this book through the Amazon Vine program at no charge in exchange for an honest review.

A fun and interesting San Francisco detective thriller
By Nancy
I love mysteries and I especially enjoy police thrillers. This is the first Jane Candiotti novel I have read. The book hooks you right from the start, with the descriptions of the people who were gunned down but I didn't care for the description of the actual shooting.
I did think many parts of this book were unrealistic. I know this is fiction and anything can happen, but still. Do 9 month pregnant women still go out on active police duty? Do gang members actually turn their lives around and become honorable human beings? I guess this could happen, but I had a hard time believing it. Edgar Silva, the former gang member in question, is a likeable character, but he seemed too fake.
In spite of these things, I did enjoy the book and plan to read the rest of the books in the series.

Mystery Reader's Dream
By Lucy Stone
How wonderful, another book by one of my favorite writers, Clyde Phillips. I'd been addicted to his TV series, Dexter -the writing is just so good- when I stumbled upon his first book , Fall from Grace, the first in the Jane Candiotti homicide detective series. Hooked again. I proceeded to read the next two as well. Finally, after much too long a wait (2004), another Jane Candiotti book- 'Unthinkable' - a mystery reader's dream- filled with intrigue and surprises with compassionate characters that grab your imagination. WARNING: This page turner will keep you up at night-highly recommended.
