The occult world owes much to Mr. Waite, for a series of competent and careful compilations that have done much to preserve the treasures of mediaevial and ancient thought. This contribution to the library is devoted to the Tarot, which he describes as "fragments of a secret tradition under the veil of divination."
We are not at all sure that the Tarot was intended primarily for divination, and still less for the usually base purpose of the fortune teller. No mechanical device can be of much avail in divination, unless the operator already possesses some measure of psychic vision, and needs no more than an exterior aid to mental concentration. In such cases the Tarot cards are of service.
The study is a fascinating one from the academic point of view, and nothing could be more complete than Mr. Waite's condensed and yet exhaustive survey of our available knowledge. It may be said, too, that his inclination is always toward the higher and spiritual interpretation. There are 78 excellent plates.

"Arthur Edward Waite (October 2, 1857 - May 19, 1942) was a scholarly mystic who wrote extensively on occult and esoteric matters, and was the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. As his biographer, R.A. Gilbert described him, "Waite's name has survived because he was the first to attempt a systematic study of the history of western occultism - viewed as a spiritual tradition rather than as aspects of proto-science or as the pathology of religion." Born in the United States, and raised in England, A.E. Waite joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1891, became a Freemason in 1901, and entered the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia in 1902. The Golden Dawn was torn by further internal feuding until Waite's departure in 1914; a year later he formed the Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, not to be confused with the Societas Rosicruciana. By that time there existed some half-dozen offshoots from the original Golden Dawn, and as a whole it never recovered." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

A hard to read, obscure, and confusing little book.

I've bought this book with expectations of getting loads of information in it, and was somewhat disappointed by it.
The book suffers from several problems :
- The book is a hard reading - Waite's style is obfuscated, which makes the non-trivial material harder to understand.
- Waite doesnt tell the whole truth, and not even half of it, not to mention the inclusion of misinformation. Examples include unexplained symbols (symbols on charioteer's belt, the fool's clothings, and many others), desciption of the emptress being 'virgo intacta', etc.
- Some of the cards' descriptions contradict, or at least appear to contradict, the pictures on the cards.
- Waite borrows a lot from earlier writers, but then goes on to pass criticism on his sources and belittles them.
So the book has to be read very carefuly, criticaly, and with a lot of patience. And those who do so *will* gain - the book is better than many of the instant tarot reading guides, giving truer and deeper information from the horse's mouth.
I suggest people to read this book, but *not* as the first book on the deck, and preferably along with other material (e.g. books about the golden dawn, tarot history, or symbolism).

Historically Important, but not a Book for Beginners

This is perhaps one of the most historically important texts on the Rider-Waite-Coleman Tarot deck ever written - because it was written by the man who designed the cards. However, as with many "historical" documents, it is problematic. Some historical context is needed to appreciate this book. Waite was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a "secret" society dedicated to the preservation of occult knowledge. It held the belief that only people who had been members and studied for many years would be "elevated" enough to be able to receive the most inner teachings, among those teachings, the "full" meaning of the Tarot cards. When this book was written in 1911, "public" knowledge of the Tarot had just started to grow, and there were many "charlatans" who were using the cards for dubious reasons. To a large extent, this book was written to denounce all of the "spurious" meanings that had become associated with the cards. Unfortunately, because so much of the "real" meanings were limited to those who had advanced in the Order, Waite is not very open in sharing those meanings with "outsiders". The result is that you get a lot of what the cards AREN'T, but not very much of what the cards ARE.
What you do get is a fairly detailed history of the cards and background on early interpreters of the cards. He provides enough "Divinatory Meanings" and a couple of spreads that you COULD use this book to learn the cards and (sort of) how to use them, but this book is really of more interest to the "serious" student of the Tarot who is looking for historic insights and history.
Another "difficulty" in this book is the language itself. It is a combination of Edwardian English, "scholarly" style, and occult terminology that can make it somewhat daunting to read. To this end, the books by Eden Gray preserve much of Waite's thoughts and interpretations but are written in a much more approachable literary style.

Essential obfuscation!

This book is essential to figuring out the RWS and clones Tarot decks, Waite's personal insights bring forth things in the cards that no one else can, even though others have perhaps tried harder to make things clear. Many Tarot student feel that Waite leaves out more than he actually discusses, like his Golden Dawn symbolism should be kept secret or something...yet what "little" he does give us is invaluable. If only one could time travel, tape him to his chair and make him write more!
(Note: The "Original Rider-Waite" set comes with a version of this book, but this is the one with the original uncolored prints by Pamela Colman Smith, the one that comes in the set doesn't have the pictures and it's tiny, this edition I think is much superior.)
