Thordecker Thrills

Of all Lawrence Sanders' many novels - and I've read a hefty selection of `em over the years - THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT is arguably my favorite. Sanders never came up with a fundamentally stranger story, or wrote in a more deeply atmospheric or evocative vein. This isn't so much a mystery novel as a long, perilous walk in the fog: it's dark, it's brooding, it's haunting, and it has just enough twists on its path to keep you engaged until the very end.
Samuel Todd is an investigator for a foundation which grants large sums of money to deserving scientists throughout the country. A brilliant but somewhat reclusive researcher named Gordon Teleford Thorndecker has applied for money to further his research into the aging process, and Todd's job is to travel to the shabby backwater town of Coburn, New York, poke around Thorndecker's lab, and determine if he's worthy of the bucks. Sounds simple...but it isn't. You see, Todd comes to town with some age-related baggage himself: he's a young man dating an older woman who he deeply loves but can't commit to because, damn it, he can't get past the age difference. When he meets Thorndecker - and Thorndecker's super-hot young wife, Julie - he realizes the scientist is in the same boat, but in reverse; the genius' obsession with aging stems partially from his need to remain attractive to his sultry bride. And this begins a very twisted tale about lust, corruption, forbidden knowledge, and a small-town's very dark, very well-kept secret; a secret, it turns out, which is not only worth lying for, but killing for.
The cast of characters is hefty but, unlike some of Sanders' weaker books, very interesting. Aside from the Godlike Teleford and the manipulative Julie,there's a handsome, humorless, and maybe villainous cop named Ronnie Goodfellow, who may or may not be Julie Thorndecker's lover and Teleford Thorndecker's henchman both; a black hotel worker named Sam Livingston, who knows more than he'll say about the evil doings in town; Al Coburn, a bitter old man who, unlike Sam, knows too much and talks too much; and Mary Thorndecker, Teleford's daughter by his first wife and a religious fanatic. Each one (and others) have motives for aiding or frustrating Todd's investigation, and the longer he stays in the dismal, dead-from-the-dandruff-down little town, the more paranoid and confused Todd becomes. Just what in the hell is Teleford doing in his research lab - and more importantly, in the nursing home he also runs, which adjoins it? And just how far will he - and the townsfolk - go to persuade Todd to sign that grant check, and save the dying little burg from oblivion?
It's hard to say more without spoiling the mystery, so let me say instead that Sanders, when he was on his game, was a masterful prose-writer and wonderful composer of internal monologue: Sam Todd is a generically hard-drinking and cynical detective, but he's so wonderfully black-humorous and self-depreciating he's a joy to follow around. If he seems to be loaded half the time he's working, that only fits the intensely gloomy and brooding atmosphere of Coburn, which is the true Main Character of the book. If Sanders was a "page-turner" of an author, well, all I can say is there are worse sins that making a reader want to flap those suckers so fast they tear at the edges. The novel is not precisely profound, but it has some interesting things to say on the American attitude towards aging, May-December romances, and the way our attitude towards death shapes our attitude towards life. And unless you're just a snob and a liar it's impossible not to take pleasure in such passages as this: "The sky still pressed down; God had abolished the sun. The air was shivery, wet and smelled of ash. There was a greasy mist on the river. A current was running, I guess, but all I could see was floating debris, garbage, and patches of glinting oil. Empty crates, grapefruit rinds, dead fish. I didn't think travel agents would push Coburn as two weeks of fun-filled days and glamorous, romance-laden nights."
Well, maybe not, but you'll still want to spend some time in Coburn. It's an ugly place to visit...but you wouldn't want to die there.

Interesting mystery!

This is the third Lawrence Sanders book I've read and I enjoyed it. The investigator is a likeable guy, the story is suspenseful and the characters are very real. Most of Sanders' lead characters have a cheeky, kind of sarcastic/funny way about them that's drawing me to his writing. Humor and suspense - a rare combination that is refreshing. Some of the medical terminology was too detailed, but otherwise a good, quick read.

Excellent mystery

I love Lawrence Sanders and had read this years ago so I was thrilled to find it on my Kindle, finally!! Good mystery with excellent characters. You can actually feel the hopelessness of the townspeople in this story. The main character is a likeable guy and the story moves along quickly. Younger people may find it dated though. No cell phones, computers and such,
